Things To Do this Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day weekend is not only a time to take a day off from work; it’s also a time to reflect on the economic and social achievements of the hard working Americans of the past and present. We have a couple suggestions for your holiday weekend!

Lakewood, California has plenty to do for the weekend warriors, like heading out to Round One Entertainment! Located in the Lakewood Mall, there’s everything from arcades, to bowling, to good food, plus so much more. It’s fun for the entire family and a good thing to do inside during the heat wave happening this weekend! If the heat wave doesn’t bother you, you could pack up your beach gear and take the short drive over to the shore! Beat the heat with the cool ocean waves and have the kids get all that weekend energy out.

Regardless of what you choose to do, all of us here at Lakewood Manor Apartments hope you have a very safe weekend!

Adopt a Family This Holiday Season

The holidays are the perfect time to reflect on gratitude and be thankful for all the amazing things that happen over the course of a year. They are also an wonderful time to give back and help the less fortunate. While there are many wonderful organization that need help in the Southern California area, one great program is the DPSS Adopt a family holiday drive.

Every year the DPSS provides Christmas gifts to low income families in need. The program gives toys, clothes and food during the holidays and helps wonderful families across the Southern California area to have a happy and warm Christmas.

If you are interested in helping out, please head over to the DPSS’ website and fill out a form to adopt a family this holiday season. The charity drive is only possible because of the contributions of individuals, groups, and organizations that participate in the Adopt-A-Family Program.

Serve Your Mac & Cheese With a Twist This Thanksgiving

Mac & cheese is a classic Thanksgiving side that sits right next to mash potatoes and stuffing as the go-to food during the holiday. The dish, however, can be a little straightforward and boring at times, so if you are looking to class up your mac & cheese this Thanksgiving, here is a tasty recipe to try.

Ingredients

Kosher salt
12 ounces of gemelli or other twisty shaped pasta
3 tablespoons of unsalted butter
1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon of dry mustard
Cayenne pepper (pinch)
1 (12-ounce) can of evaporated milk
1/2 cup of milk
3/4 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
3/4 cup of shredded monterey jack cheese
1/2 cup of grated parmesan cheese
1/2 cup of panko breadcrumbs
2 tablespoons of chopped parsley

For this upscale twist on mac & cheese start by cooking the pasta for about eight minutes. Next melt the butter, add the flour, mustard and cayenne into the saucepan and stir to make a paste. Now whisk in the milks and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Let simmer and whisk occasionally for six to seven minutes. Once completed, throw in the cheeses and all but 2 tablespoons of the parmesan. Stir until the mixture is melted.

Next mix together the panko, herbs, 1 tablespoon of butter and the remaining parmesan and microwave for one minute. Drain the pasta, and throw in one tablespoon butter, then mix in the cheese sauce. Season the mac & cheese with some salt and sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture on top.

Best Plant Types For Your Apartment

Are you horrible with plants? Do you forget to water them and essentially kill every piece of greenery in your apartment? Well don’t feel bad—most of us are like that. But if you want to add some greenery and nature into your apartment, getting a plant is a must. Here are three perfect plants for busy professionals to try in their apartment.

Snake plants: are perfect for the person who is never home. They require little water, can survive in near darkness, and they also help purify the air.

Iron plant: this plant comes from Chinese origins and has a high tolerance for neglect and punishment. It also requires little light or water to thrive.

Jade plant: Jade plants need lots of sunlight but very little water. So just place one on a windowsill and let it grow on its own.
